Single-Use Plastics Fund Act 2024: A New Era in Waste Management

by Ali Ulvi Haliloğlu 29 Jan 2024

Starting in 2024, a new law, the Single-Use Plastics Fund Act (EWKFondsG), will come into force in Germany, marking a significant change in the treatment of single-use plastic waste. This law is an important step in the fight against environmental pollution and aims to reduce the production and use of single-use plastics.

What is the Single-Use Plastics Fund Act?

The EWKFondsG is a law that requires manufacturers of certain single-use plastic products to pay a special levy. This levy is paid into a special fund, which is then used to cover the costs of cleaning and disposing of single-use plastic waste.

Which products are affected?

The law affects a wide range of products commonly found in the environment, such as beverage cups, to-go food containers, lightweight carrier bags, balloons and, from 2027, fireworks.

Registration and tax liability for manufacturers

Manufacturers subject to this law must register with the Federal Environment Agency starting in 2024. Starting in 2025, they will be required to pay an annual fee based on the quantity of single-use plastic products placed on the market.

Impact on businesses and consumers

The law aims to encourage companies to adopt more sustainable alternatives, while the impact on consumer prices is expected to be minimal.

Future developments

The law will be evaluated by the end of 2027 to examine whether it is possible to extend it to other products in order to further reduce the release of single-use plastic into the environment.

The Single-Use Plastics Fund Act is a crucial step toward reducing environmental pollution caused by single-use plastics. It is an example of proactive measures to address global environmental problems.
